Art History: The Renaissance

The art of this period is discussed through a survey of visual arts, exploration of history, major artists’ techniques, terminology, and aesthetics. Emphasis will be on the evolution of the arts, identification of major artists, and an appreciation and understanding of a variety of art forms. Classes include visual examination and open discussion. Further your understanding of art appreciation, criticism, and history. This process will also assist artists in criticism and thoughtful practice in producing one’s own art.


Art of the Book

Students will create four book structures in this class: a Simple Pamphlet book, a Japanese Tab Bound book, a Hard Cover Accordion book, and a Hard Cover Book with Signatures sewn on tapes. Classes will focus on the techniques, structures, tools, materials and processes. All materials provided for $ 8. Class size limited to 10.

Dowsing for Today

Dowsing (also called “divining”) skills are as important in the modern world as they were in 16th century Germany. Dowsing was conducted in South Dakota in the late 19th and 20th centuries to help farmers locate water wells on their property and is still used today. Glen Johnson has helped many local property owners in determining the best spot to drill for water.

This workshop will explore: communication changes throughout the course of the disease, understanding and decoding verbal and behavioral messages, identifying ways to connect and communicate through the stages of dementia.

Easy-to-make natural products using pure therapeutic grade essential oils and simple common ingredients contribute to a safe, happy summer. We’ll be making deet-free insect repellent spray, sunburn spray, after-bug-bite roller and chemical free hand/ body wipes. The supply fee makes all four items and also includes the recipes so you can make them again at home. $20 supply fee to instructor.

Learn all about everyday herbs – about their medicinal uses and how to dry, store them, and ideas for cooking (including recipes). Discuss healing properties of herbs to use in teas and herbal plants to grow and cook with and where to purchase them. Learn how to make elderberry and aronia berry (chokeberry) – a huge immune system booster) syrup/tea/shrub from scratch. Discover plant and herbal remedies that can help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, viruses and bacterial infections, fatigue, pain and how they can be anti-aging. Herb seeds for planting and herbs for tea and cooking will be available for purchase.

Falun Gong is an ancient, traditional Chinese practice of “selfcultivation”– a way to improve mental and physical wellness through meditation and five easy-to-learn exercises. Practice is based on the universal values of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. This introductory class will provide a brief overview of the system, plus a demonstration of the exercises. All Falun Gong instruction is free of charge; the class fee supports RSU21 Adult Education.
